Jul 08, 2017

The Allegheny Technologies Inc (ATI) is one of the world's largest manufacturers of specialty steel. Yesterday, the company announced a joint venture with GEAviation to develop a new technology for the manufacture of titanium alloy powders without melting (meltless). The joint venture will build a new R & D pilot production base, while the titanium powder under development will be used for material gain manufacturing applications, including 3D printing. By doing so, GE intends to expand control of the metal powder manufacturing powder market.

ATI will provide operational, technical and project support for the joint venture company. The joint venture will utilize ATI's technology, manufacturing and quality management to produce specialty metal powders and high-quality titanium nickel based alloys that will be used in key and technologically advanced applications. The joint venture will also utilize GEAviation's engineering and development capabilities and technical knowledge of the use of titanium alloy powders.

"We are happy to be working with GEAviation," said RichHarshman, chairman, President and CEO of ATI. Special metal powder science is a revolutionary technology, and we intend to maintain and enhance our industry-leading position."
